Unit 1
Overview of Court Proceedings
Categories of law -- statutory, common, administrative, law v. equity, and court opinions.
The standard order of criminal and civil trials, including discovery.
Commonly used legal terms and phrases, including Latin word roots.
The history of digital reporting and court reporting.
- Jurisdiction of state courts, federal courts, and administrative agencies.
Unit 2
Digital Reporting and Freelance/Depositions
Methods of audio recording and recording equipment;
Equipment set up, microphone placement, and channel assignment for various proceeding types and room configurations;
- Setting up a recording in various room configurations;
- Courtroom and freelance/deposition process, reporter preparation, duties and notes.
- Swearing in witness and interpreters.
Unit 3
Playback Software and Annotations
How to annotate proceedings and important information to include deciphering information within annotations;
How to perform basic troubleshooting and equipment testing;
How to conduct playbacks;
The order of importance -- speaker identifications, notes, time-stamping
- Sample annotations
Unit 4
Integrity, Stamina, Terminology, and Internet Research
The field’s Code of Conduct, ethics, and confidentiality;
The importance of physical and emotional stamina;
Effective Internet research techniques;
Other resources and reference customary to the profession; and
Setup techniques via video demonstrations.

Continuing Education Classes:
We understand that sometimes
life happens. If you are unable to attend your class, please
email Continuing-ed@uwm.edu. We will be happy to contact your instructor
to let them know and provide you with any material missed.
If you cancel 8 days prior to
the start of your class, we are happy to issue an account credit/voucher to
you. If you do not provide an 8 day cancellation notice, you will not be
eligible to receive a credit/voucher*. Unfortunately, no refunds will be
provided.
*Please
remember, vouchers are not issued for and cannot be used towards trips, online,
or credit courses.*
In order for Continuing
Education to continue to provide the community with the outreach programming
that we have, all cancellations will be assessed a 6% administrative fee. If
you would like to provide a donation or contribute to our scholarship fund, you
can do so at check-out by adding any dollar amount to your order! You can also
contact our department at continuing-ed@uwm.edu. Continuing Education is
cost-recovery and relies on community donations to help support its programs.
